Project Financing and Managing Foreign Exchange Risk in Myanmar

The British Chamber of Commerce is pleased to present a joint event between the Chamber's Energy Working Group (EWG) and Financial Services Working Group (FSWG).

The energy transition to low, or no, carbon sources is well underway. Globally a wide range of financial instruments, structures and actions are being deployed. The ASEAN region has examples across all these approaches from project finance, by means of equity and mezzanine debt, to corporate level transactions utilising special purpose vehicles and mergers and acquisitions.

There are challenges in Myanmar and it is anticipated that approaches which have worked elsewhere can be rapidly adapted to suit local circumstance and become a key part of the national green recovery in 2021 and beyond.

We are incredibly pleased to present speakers from UK Export Finance, TCX and Astris to speak about potential available funding as well as managing the associated risks, particularly with currency.

UK Export Finance (UKEF) have recently updated their plan (overview here) significantly increasing their risk appetite for Myanmar. How best to take advantage of this? Leisha Blackburn, Senior Business Origination Officer at EECAN, South Asia and Asia Pacific and Julian Lynn, Regional Head of Origination, Middle East and Asia Pacific of the UKEF will present.

Astris Finance is an international finance advisory with a substantial renewables capability. Headquartered in Washington DC; they have ASEAN offices in Singapore and Vietnam. Recently, together with TCX, they have been studying solar PPAs remunerated in local currencies and its impact on the cost of capital. Hugo Virag, Director at Astris Finance LLC will report on that work.

TCX was founded in 2007 by a consortium of MIVs and DFIs (including the UKs FCDO) plus the Dutch and German governments acting directly. Based in Amsterdam it provides currency risk cover, and is already active in Myanmar. Jerome Pirouz, Deputy Head of Structuring and Sales of TCX will speak on their behalf.

Following each presentation there will be a Q&A moderated by Azeem and Neil of the British Chamber's FSWG and EWG. If you have any questions you would like to submit in advance please email the working group chairs, Azeem Azimuddin and Neil Carmichael.

This is an open meeting so please feel free to circulate this invitation.
