The Value of Water for Business

Myanmar is home to the two iconic rivers, Ayeyarwady and Thanlwin, regarded as the last two remaining free-flowing rivers in tropical Asia. However, both rivers are facing serious threats, not only from climate change - causing drought, flooding and other extreme weather events, but also from human-induced impacts such as pollution, overfishing, and infrastructure developments. The challenge of having access to clean and sufficient water has posed a direct threat to businesses and the communities where they operate.

According to UN reports, about 3.6 billion people worldwide live in water-stressed areas and without further action based on projected demand, the world will face a 40 per cent shortfall in freshwater supply within 10 years. It is also estimated that some $301 billion of business value is at risk due to water scarcity, pollution and climate change. Therefore, it is important for the companies to recognize the value of water and the severe financial impact that water scarcity poses to their businesses.

WWF-Myanmar is addressing the challenge of water risks and pollution in both industrial and corporate sectors by promoting the water stewardship approach that embeds the concept in sustainability standards, building the concept into sectoral initiatives, growing levels of water disclosure and improving collaborations. In this webinar, we will focus on the connectivity between water and business performance by highlighting the value of water for business sustainability, the potential risks associated with water scarcity and pollution and will introduce the water stewardship approach to transform the risks into business value.
