Impacts of illegal wildlife trade on your business

Hard numbers on current threats, what can be done to

Myanmar is home to an abundance of wildlife. Myanmar's rich store of wildlife is gravely threatened by poaching for the illegal wildlife trade. Surrounded by key transit and destination countries, Myanmar is used by traffickers to source charismatic animals such as tigers and Asian elephants, as well as threatened species of bear, hornbill and gibbon, and the critically endangered Burmese star tortoise. The demand for 'exotic meats' and medicinal products with status and beliefs as drivers, also represent major pressures. Challenged by its porous borders, Myanmar also plays a role as a transit country on established illicit supply chains, whilst certain taxa from overseas are sought by some consumers within.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the risk of wildlife markets producing novel v zoonotic diseases (those transmitted from animals to humans) into sharp focus. The unchecked trade in wildlife in Myanmar and neighbouring countries endangers not only public health and national economies but also the region's entire stability.

In response to this threat, we are working with multiple partners, including Myanmar civil societies, to strengthen monitoring and prevention, and to increase public awareness of the harm caused by wildlife trafficking.
