The urbanisation of Myanmar is increasing rapidly, with cities flourishing across the country at a fast rate. The population in Yangon is expected to continue to increase by at least 1-2 million residents within the next 20 years, and Myanmar's population as a whole is urbanising. The importance of how cities will develop to support this population growth is a key issue, in terms of encouraging industrial progress, taking into account environmental concerns, the movement of people within and between cities, and powering these cities sufficiently.

The British Chamber Myanmar, in partnership with Surbana Jurong and supported by PwC, will launch a series of breakfast briefings on Yangon city development. Over the course of the year, we will facilitate panel discussions and speaker presentations discussing:

  • Transport infrastructure; impact and effect on cities
  • Water, energy and utilities required to support a new city
  • SEZ and townships

The Chamber will launch this topical series on 4 October at the Baker McKenzie Office, Level 18, Sule Square Office, with presentations from Surbana Jurong and PwC, giving an overview of city planning and how the development of cities can contribute to the political and economic stability of Myanmar. The following three events will take place every 6-8 weeks, focusing on the specific topics and key considerations above, related to building new cities. Dates of each event will be published shortly after the launch.
